I’m not a big fan of multi-volume sagas, but I’m making an exception for Del Toro Moon, Darby Karchut’s Middle Grade stories of the Colorado family that fights ancient demons with the aid of… talking Andalusian war horses.
I wrote in my review of the first book that it might sound too Disney-cute for words. It wasn’t then. It still isn’t. The horses’ dialogue is a major part of the attraction here, and it’s good snappy dialogue. Turk, Rigo and Izzy come across as real individuals and I loved every page they took over.
“What are you doing out here?” I asked.
“I’m a horse. This is a field. What do you think I was doing?”
Good story, a lovely ending and a GREAT villain – a sorceress who rides a motorbike; I hope there’s a lot more of her in the next installments. I’m already waiting for the third volume.
