Spike Milligan

It’s said you should never meet your heroes. Perhaps you shouldn’t read about them either. This brisk, very readable, biography of the legendary comic doesn’t appear to be a deliberate hatchet job, but the subject does not come out in a decent light. Milligan emerges as a self-absorbed workaholic (pretty much?) oblivious to the concerns of others, and whose famous mental problems – which once elicited sympathy from me – never seem to have engendered any desire for self-reflection, let alone change.

There are other biographies that are said to be more sympathetic. I may try one of them.
