The Diary of a Bookseller

What a great book. I bought it thinking I would dip into it over the coming months and ended up reading it all in two days. It’s full of fascinating detail about the mechanics of managing a second-hand bookshop, not to mention a few rants about the threats to such booksellers posed by the Amazon juggernaut.

But what I found most memorable were SB’s accounts of the customers who visited his shop. In particular, the almost unbelievable rudeness of many of them. I used to think that anyone who liked books and visited bookshops was automatically a Good Person and guaranteed a place in heaven.

Not anymore.

No.

Not by a long shot.
